Calypso Crashes when trying to make general surface

Hello,

I am having a problem with my software in that if I create a general surface, immediately when I try to close the feature it pops up with this error message. I can press cancel, but it still doesn't close the feature, so if I do happen to open, it forces me to ctr alt del kill calypso to proceed. It also doesn't care if there is points inside or not. This is Calypso 6.8 with a relatively new install (First time trying to use gen surface feature on this machine).

Its for the poor souls that dont have Freeform.

Can also be used as a point container, that you then can recall points from to other stuff, or with pcm to make your own calculations, instead of using a sphere, a plane, a cylinder etc. Then you have all the points in the same element.

Poor soul here, can confirm.

Unfortunately the CTR Y doesnt interrupt the error message. Also doesnt solve the issue of not being able to use general surface. It looks like I get to have 100 different profile characteristics on individual space points?

Can you recall space points into a 3d curve and turn on digitizing.
I'm not at a live machine right now, but I thought I did this once years ago?

I agree and this is a good case to push my requisition for both. I've just been working with what I have.

General surface has worked for me before in profiling surfaces that Calypso calls "invalid geometry". Our tolerances are fairly open so I don't need to rely on a high density scan to find every nook and cranny, just enough single points to make me comfortable that the part is at least the right shape. Although a bunch of individual points is murder on the cmm runtime.

Unfortunately since we upgraded to 6.8, the general surface no longer seems to be working so I am assuming it is a cmm setup issue that I didn't do right.

You could make 100 different profile characteristics, mask and group them, then make a min/max result characteristic, then result element that only shows the most deviated of that min/max.

That's how I did it before I was blessed with curve/freeform. But I never used general surface, that sounds easier.

Hi,Perry

Next time when this error message pops up, you can have a try to press “ESC” of your keyboard rather than click “Cancel”.
I close the error message by this way in my 6.6 version, every time the error message pops up when I change location of collected points by dragging the nominal point with my mouse on CAD model. But I am not sure whether it works in 6.8 version.
I hope it will be helpful.

I have a similar issue as the original post.

When I select general surface from the features menu, open the feature window and try to close it, I get the error shown in the attachment.

The same happens under any circumstance I have tried to use general surface. I can go in and define the points I want taken and closing the window will result in that error no matter what I do.4735_f8cbc7b099d4175c6de41944ce0f0b54.jpg

Zeiss Accura

I tried emailing calypso support. Haven't heard from them.

The solution I found was quite simple. I simply updated my software (version 6.8) to the latest service pack and that fixed my problem (Now I am Version 6.8.24 (23.02.2021)).

Sounds like they reintroduced the problem 🤣

Calypso 5.2 has a similar bug 🙄
This type of error pops up if I change anything about the General Surface after creating it.
If I recall correctly I...

Create feature
Rename feature
Set correct alignment for FCF
Pick points on CAD

I had a conversation with the Zeiss team earlier about this crashing issue in 2021 Calypso which they fixed in service pack 1 but they have purposefully bugged this feature so that it cannot be used like it used to in 2016 or 2017. This is so that more people will be steered towards buying freeform license.

With 2021 service pack 1, the system doesnt crash but they give incorrect surface vectors, cannot even be entered manually and ultimately making the feature utterly useless, which to my opinion is pretty stupid, if you dont want people to use a feature then just remove it rather than bugging it.

So if you want to use this feature, revert back to the version which it worked in which according to Zeiss tech was calypso 2017 (they broke the feature starting 2018, idk for sure though)

There is a tedious work around by using space points, space point distance and min/max results. (see attached)

How do I make get a profile of a surface without using Freeform.pdf

Does anybody know if this bug has been corrected in the latest version of Calypso? I'm running 7.0.02 and I'm going to try to get our IT to upgrade us to 7.4 + the patch today. I'm having an issue trying to measure the profile of the torus below:

Zachary,

With Calypso 7.4, Zeiss has completely removed General Surface.

I would recommend pushing for Curve + Freeform addons along with the 7.4 upgrade.

P.S. Sorry to hear that your IT controls your Calypso software versioning.

Yeah, it's frustrating having to go through IT for every single little action, but I guess I get it from a security/liability point of view. That's really unfortunate that they removed the General Surface from the new version, is there any way to work around a profile callout on a torus without using that?
