Jason,

I have dealt with water in air lines before and addressed the issue with Zeiss Hardware Support. The installation manuals for your CMMs describe the air quality required for successful operation. Water = bad.

CMMs usually come with a separator, but they can only do so much. We installed an additional filter system immediately before the CMM intake, one that was recommended by Zeiss. It wasn't terribly expensive, and it solved the problem.

Our Eclipse has two small units inside the cover.

At another company oil from the air made its way to the CMM. Very costly as Zeiss took all the air lines loose on the CMM and "blew" alcohol through the lines to clean them.

We have a Refrigerated Compressed Air Dryer for our air. Ours is a 4.7 amp unit that works fine. Our air is sometimes mostly water. We also have two additional Oil/Water Condensate Separation Filters before the air dryer.

Water will destroy a CMM, specifically the air bearings.

Why air dryers and Uninterruptible Power Supplies are not sold with every CMM is a cost savings that is shortsighted. They are cheap insurance.

This is so true, Erik. One Contura that I worked on blew three logic boards in the controller before the company finally installed a power-conditioning battery backup.
