[Ke...]
IT is pushing to have all of our metrology equipment networked, so that we will no longer be allowed to use flash drives (yes this is the real reason for the requirement 🙄 ) We are currently running Windows 10 on our CMMs. Are there any issues that I should be aware of (firewall issues, etc)? Is it possible for IT to give a lowly "user" any sort of secondary admin privilidges, for software updates/patches etc? Thanks in advance,
[Ma...]
I don't quite understand your point. Once it's set up and running, then there is no need for admin rights - only for applying updates to Calypso - which can be done with IT support. We had USBs blocked once - until BOSS came and failed to show customers something 😃
[Th...]
The CMMs are directly connected to the workstations that run Calypso via a network interface, so it's possible for firewall policies to get in the way, but I haven't had that happen yet. Disabling USB function is a valid IT security strategy, since it limits the possibility of someone plugging in a malware-ridden stick they found on the sidewalk. However, if they just blanket-disable external USB ports and internal headers, I assume the hardware dongle would stop working. Your domain user account can be given privileges to install software, but convincing your IT department that it's necessary is another question. I'm currently not allowed to. [Je...]
. I think this common IT strategy provides a perception of security more than actually achieving security. Most threats come from internet access, not mission impossible, spy-movie style USB infiltration. .

[Ow...]
Stuxnet is probably one of the BOT users found on this forum frequently 🙄 . Ford has a new "Save the Tree's" campaign (at least in my area) to where when you buy a new vehicle, instead of giving you all the printed and signed paperwork covering purchase, warranty, etc, they give you a flash drive to keep in your glovebox. Me being old-school, I took it home and printed everything out anyway for file retention. Anybody want to guess who's adds started popping up on every web-page I visited? 😠
