UK is a wonderful country, basically all white Americans are british people. I remember George w bush once told in his remarkable speech after the World Trade centre attack "America don't have a better friend then great Britain".

Im wondering how many people here work as contractors? Does anyone have any side gigs programming CMMs? Its something I've been thinking about but I'm not sure how to go about getting customers.

I'm currently doing contracting for a small Aerospace Company. I applied as full time knowing I cant leave my current job. I proposed a part time position and training for their employees and they agreed to the terms. Pay was not that high at 28$ an hour but I got my foot in at some aerospace experience. I averaged about 16 hours every two weeks, but it has been very slow now.

When I worked for a Medical Device company we were required to sign a NCICA document. I'm surprised most aerospace companies don't do the same. I was looking into side gig work before i got my current position.

I'm just starting to do freelance programming, so I don't have to depend on any company. I know it'll probably be a hard road, but I'm willing to work for my dream. Moreover, if I fail, I'll not lose anything, and I can get a job at some good company where I'll get big money. I decided to start with creating various sites to find out what money I could earn from it, and I checked my payments with the help of https://www.paystubcreator.net/, as well as receiving my salary by printing receipts. Later on, I thought about something more significant, like game design or something like that. Any advice is welcome.

That's exciting to hear, Maggie. There is a huge need for freelance programming. Best of luck in your new venture!

When i left my last job i did it in a way that i was very honest with them as to why i was leaving, but also respectful because i had a lot of great friends there.
In my exit interview i let them know that they would never be able to fill my position with a high level programmer because their need for programming is on longer a full time position, and a solid programmer won't hire in to be a part time programmer and part time regulatory paperwork auditor, its just not going to happen.
My new job is 5 minutes up the road from my old job.
So before i left i had some discussions with key people and i laid the groundwork for me to return as a contractor on an as needed basis, just a couple hours a week before or after my normal shift if ever needed.
Well my old boss just texted me last week, and i think something is in the works.
As far as i'm aware they've never brought a former employee back as a contractor, and i thought it was a very low chance of ever happening, but i guess they've had a couple meetings and my name was brought up as a possible solution.
So my thoughts have now shifted to.......How much do i ask for? what are the tax implications of working as a contractor (how much does Sam grab)? Would it be better if i was a business?
I want them to hire me, so i don't want to ask for insane $$, but i also don't want to work for burger money.
I'm thinking "Double time" from my previous wage would be reasonable, maybe even a little low.
Has anybody been hired back as a contractor to a place they worked as an employee before?

I offered to work for "Double time" for a place that I left; so that I could give them some on the job training, because they did not have experience in Zeiss' Calypso... that was a "nogo" for them 🤣 They probably thought that I was tryng to fleece them, but I didn't really need the cash because the new gig was paying almost 2x what I was making there. I was just sorry for the new guy who was thrown to the wolves

$95 - $125 / hour is standard contract rate among several offline programmers here in Minnesota. Also, Zeiss IMT in Maple Grove, MN would be a great resource for quote formation. They have an in-house metrology lab and are very "thorough" when quoting a job.

Do a detailed cost estimate for your customer. Your former employer is now your customer. Don't let them confuse the two. Make sure to iron out all aspects of the work: fixture formation, printout design, stylus creation, etc..

Your former pay rate is inconsequential, because during your employment, part of your compensation was in the form of benefits such as insurance. As an independent contractor, more liability and operating expenses are appropriated to you than would otherwise be covered by your former company.

Your skillset is in high demand. You're a professional now. Get paid like it.

I earn about 72000EUR a year, which is currently the equivalent of about 81000 dollars, but I must also say that I manage the entire quality management and carry out the measurement technology.
Since we are a small company, I am the only worker in quality assurance.
I work about 45-50 hours a week and I am not married and I pay the highest tax rate in Germany.
