RAPID TRAVEL SPEED CONTROL

On our Contura the speed of the rapid travel is high, when moving between probing points that are close to each other, often dangerously high when near an obstacle and the speed control knob is not always suitable because I often use a 0.5 MM probe with a 0.02 speed on a small feature in a tight space. Full speed of scanning is already slow enough but needed. At the next move the CMM jumps really fast and I would like to control that by slowing it down.
I am not concerned about the cycle time; slow rapid is OK for the most part. How can I do that? How can I choose a less aggressive rapid move? I don't even dream about a gradual acceleration from standing still... that would be ideal. The whole machine literally shakes and once I put a dial indicator next the machine frame and it jumped close to an 1/8"...
I first contacted Zeiss tech people about the rapid issue back in last July, approx. 6 months ago, they said they will check with the software team... I still haven't gotten an answer.

Would anyone here know how to control rapid moves?

If, in addition to lower speed, you also want gradual acceleration, this can only be done by changing certain parameters in the control unit. Zeiss service can do this, but it's a permanent change.

Thanks. It baffles me why that isn't a standard part of the design. What is the benefit of having a precision equipment jump and jerk from standing still to whatever speed and deal with the effects of vibration, shaking, etc... Defying common sense.

Same here. Even more, as this feature was already present in Zeiss' UMESS software 25-30 years ago.
I never understood why they left it out of Calypso.

Possibly just marketing policy. Jerking machines look more impressive at trade fairs 🤣

Your Global speed setting is at CMM Start.
The setting I posted is for setting a single feature or a group of features that you decide what speed to run.
Typically for myself, if a stylus is entering a blind hole or a stepped hole, I set that specific feature speed to 30. Less chance of damaging high dollar equipment.

Is this a known issue? Or could it be that my machine is out of balance? I get that Zeiss wants to build an efficient and fast machine to please the industry, but I strongly believe it effects the reading quality.
After I changed the global rapid speed setting to 150, and 80, and at 2 suspected features to 50, I noticed that my approach speed is slow, so the setting works, but the jerky motion is at retract, after probing is done, the head flies away from the probing point, and THAT is where the problem is. Is there a way to control the retract speed? This seems to be unaffected by the change I made.

This is normal behavior. I think the logic behind it is this: If approaching the feature at low speed succeeded and probing didn't fail, it's fair to assume that retracting at full speed along the same path will work too.
Scanning machines feature a standstill check (don't know the correct term), which means that before scanning starts or touch point values are read, the probe must first have come to a complete halt. So in theory the jerking shouldn't impact the reading quality. But honestly, sometimes I also have my doubts about that, even though our 20 year old Contura is far from the acceleration capabilities of today's machines and we never drive at full speed.
