[To...]
Something may be wrong with your base alignment. Can you post a screenshot of your base alignment window and cad screen?

[Th...]
You haven't defined a X or Y location in your base alignment. Without those I would guess it's filling in the machine zeroes and driving off to the limit switches. You could use your existing side plane for Y and take a single point on one of the left or right side flats for X.

Then tick the "Keep original alignment from CAD model" button. This will automatically apply any offsets needed to keep that trihedron right where you want it. Make sure it's where you need it to be before you do this.

[Ri...]
FYI Your Base Alignments do not have to be Datums. They can be any feature you want to use to establish what you want for the Base Alignment. Then you can create an Alignment for Datums. For myself, my base alignments are never used for any measurements of any features. They are only to define where the part is within the volumetric capacity of the CMM. I create a "CNC Alignment" that begins to establish my primary Datum Reference Frame (DRF).
[Je...]
. That's right on the money, Rick. Using a base alignment for measurement purposes is common but can cause problems. Best practice is to create additional alignments for Datum Reference Frames and for measurement results. Jeff Frodermann Meier Tool & Engineering Anoka, Minnesota . [To...]
Please sign in to view this quote. I prefer to use the datum features in the characteristics that have fields for the Primary, Secondary or Tertiary Datum so I can take advantage of Outer Tangential and ISO 5459 settings automatically. This action creates the necessary alignment, Yes, you can create secondary alignments and edit their behavior to do the same but it takes so much more effort. That being said, there are some situations where the secondary alignment does make things easier. I can tell you were a former PC-DMIS programmer. 🙂
[Je...]
. hahah, thanks Tom. I agree. OTE & ISO are important to take advantage of. Thanks for mentioning the other option, probably the quicker one, to enable them in characteristics. I actually do not have PC-DMIS experience, but I am the lone Zeiss programmer in my company, so that may be coming in the future 😕 Jeff Frodermann Meier Tool & Engineering Anoka, Minnesota . I may be wrong. Hey Roberto, what's the scoop?...lol
