Yearly Calibration.

Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering how everyone's calibration goes every year. We seem to have trouble every year and right now the person from zeiss is going on day 8. Our machine is a Contura G2.

Thanks.

I have 3 Contura's and every year it normally takes 2.5 days to calibrate each one, but the last 2 years it has taken several extra days but it is a newer tech(Tony) that takes so long.

Typically 3.5-4 days on the Contura and 4.5-5 days on our large Accura (16/42/10). We ask for the As-Found Report which takes the extra day to run.
Also on the Accura there is a half day used to replace 1 or 2 of the air bearings

We also have a Contura. I think it's longest calibration was 4.5 days, which included replacing some air bearings. My experience with calibrations is that the techs, who are SUPER professional, show up as early as possible, and stay as late as possible, to get the job done as quickly as possible. I've never been unsatisfied.

I have a FULL calibration every yr. on my Prismo Nav. We have the before & after done. He removes all the covers, does a 100% bearing check etc...
If nothing goes wrong, he is usually gone in 4-4.5 days.

He is a local tech that actually lives here in town so its quick to get here and he can work late and still be home for dinner lol.

As others have stated the Zeiss guys have been top notch. In early stay late and get on to the next job.

Elvis Hernandez or Dave Zeigfried are the two techs that have calibrated our Contura G2 and Accura 2.
Being we do aerospace we have to have the full A2LA Certification done. Neither tech has gone over 3 days.

Wow i must be lucky, our G2 usually only takes 1.5 to 2 days.
I guess its easier because i have a Vast XT, an articulating head would probably take a day all by itself.

Our Accura 2 with a Vast Gold head and a portable rotary table generally takes 3 days (Rotary calibration included). They are very thorough removing all shields and cleaning.
A few times it's been delayed a day or so waiting on parts or tools but, this year. 3.25 days.

We just had a before and after calibration and the guy was here for 8 hours...thats it. Ive never seen a calibration take more than a day on any cmm.

Our tech was here for the week, arrived late, left early, long lunches, lot of texting/playing cell games. Didn't clean dust off the machine underneath our fixture plate before doing his "before" test. Skipped a day because he was out "shopping for a tool". I was generally unsatisfied.

Our Duramax CMM's take around 1 day or less.
With 4 Duramax's, I schedule them to have 2 done at a time (annually) to help save on travel and set-up expenses.
2 are done around the 1st of the year, 2 are mid-year so we never have more than two with more than 6 months from calibration should we choose to verify one with the other.

I've worked at different places who chose to have their CMM's calibrated by non-OEM technicians who could have a calibration done in less than 4 hours no matter the size of it and I can guarantee you get what you pay for.

It just depends on how critical/important accuracy and longevity is to your application.

On the flip-side, a $30 dollar watch and a $300 dollar watch tell the same time.

Depends on what level of calibration and whether or not it is an A2LA. I get the Enhanced with As Found. Usually takes about 4 days depending on tech. I also have been making use of the drive and Air Bearing Warranty the last few years so that takes a little longer. And with any luck I don't have to have Zeiss send in the Guru to fix some other techs mistakes. Basic cal's are usually a day or 2.

Can anyone point me to where there is a requirement for aerospace to have the as Found/as left condition report on the calibration certificate? I am newer to quality and trying to make sure that I fully understand the requirement on this before proceeding with a Basic vs a Complete Calibration of my Contura G2.
Thanks.

If you are NADCAP certified or going to be NADCAP certified, it is required to have an AS FOUND/AS LEFT Certificate of Calibration (A2LA). They want to see that the machine remains within the allowed measurement of uncertainty. Some Aerospace Customers may request/require that you have your machines calibrated to the A2LA as well.
