Surface profile/Form

Ignore my post. I assume now you're talking about the Calypso characteristic labeled Form, which I've never used. However, the help file says it's evaluating the deviation from max to min value perpendicular to the feature surface, which seems to me like it's acting like an unconstrained surface profile?

In Calypso 5.2 I could not figure out how to get surface profile to not reference a coordinate system. Calypso would flag the characteristic red every time. With form Calypso gave results that matched other methods and flagged the characteristic green.

The main difference is that the actual for surface profile using bilateral tolerancing will be doubled. Form will simply report the max. form deviation.

Calypso 5.2
I was measuring a punched rectangle using the rectangle feature. The punched hole was nearly perfect, as I would expect an EDM'ed punch to make in sheet metal. The issue is I don't know how to get Calypso to measure the profile of a rectangle to itself. No matter what I tried the profile kept reporting ridiculous numbers of over 0.010". Form gave me results that matched reality.

I've had the same problems, Erik. I think it has to do with the way the software is establishing tolerance bands for profile. I know this is an area Zeiss has been working to improve. Calypso 2021 includes some upgrades for profile evaluation, but there is still room for growth, especially when using a datum reference frame.

After a few calls to Zeiss, I've managed to set up profile characteristics with plausible results. If I'm evaluated rectangle slots, I may use the rectangle strategy to capture points, but then I recall the points into a 3d curve. I then use the "Limit evaluation" option under the evaluation tab to remove corner points (our prints specify corner exclusion anyway).

If you don't have curve and freeform, then form may be your best option, acknowledging that form cannot reference datums. Perhaps an application specialist at Zeiss would be able to help.
