How Common is it for the calibration technician to have collisions during a calibration? is this something to be worried about? or can he correct course after something like that? I witnessed him crash twice in once day and they didn't seem to be a light collision. [No...] Posted November 10, 2021 Share Posted November 10, 2021 Are you talking of a Zeiss technician? 😱 If so, send him to hell immediately 🤬 If it's a third-party technician, gift-wrap him first. Collisions which knock the probe off the head can do serious damage to the sensor. And if the incident isn't documented, Zeiss may blame you for the damage later. [Je...] Posted November 10, 2021 Share Posted November 10, 2021 . I'd add to Norbert's comments: Remember to practice empathy. This tech. is a human being, too. Tone of voice and the ability to listen can help solve problems. That being said, yes, take the crashes very seriously. Document them, and report them both to your superiors at work and to Zeiss. At the very least, request for a 2nd technician to be provided (at Zeiss's cost) to audit the machine and assist in a new, start-from-scratch, complete calibration. Insist that the crashes have rendered the ISO 10360 qualification done up until the crashes void. The calibration needs to be restarted after a 2nd technician inspects the machine. The first technician cannot perform this work alone, because he/she would be subject to bias. Be polite but firm. Your six-figure $$$ CMM cannot be neglected simply because Zeiss or even your company wants to rush through the qualification. Jeff Frodermann Meier Tool & Engineering Anoka, Minnesota . And yes, I would demand another technician to make sure the machine can still be verified within specs. Especially if it was a Zeiss technician. Zeiss may owe you a new head for the machine. I'm the one in charge of the quality lab at my facility and I've seen many calibrations but I wanted to make sure I wasn't overreacting. I know that many time's techs are sent out to the wolves right after training and can make mistakes as well. I'm not really as mean as I may sometimes sound 🤣 🤣 🤣 I hereby swear that up to now all Zeiss techs left the bulding alive 🤠 On the other hand, when a tech produces two heavy crashes and - as it seems - doesn't tell the customer on his own, he deserves no better 😉 Maybe I've seen too many halfhearted techs over the years.
