Educational Background

Out of curiosity, what's everyone's educational background? Do you think a bachelors is necessary for success in the world of CMM Programming? I myself foolishly stopped a handful of credit hours away from a Computer Science AS.

I agree, Martin. Also, I see you're from The Czech Rep! I spent the entire summer of 2016 in Lysá nad Labem for job training; had a lot of fun! Drink a Gambrinus for me, my friend!

If your just worried about being able to get a decent job as a CMM programmer, all you *need* is a HS diploma... good critical thinking skills, and employers who are willing to invest in their employees.
With that being said, some companies have associate's degrees as minimum requirements (often waved based on work experience). Additionally, having an associate's and/or bachelor's degree can get you a jumpstart on the pay scale, and may be required (or be beneficial) for any consideration of advancement.

I have a STEM degree (In chemistry, I started out in a fermentation research lab and ended up running a metrology lab, long story) and I have to admit that it has probably helped me a good bit. However, lately and especially since COVID, I've been racking up tons of certs.

I think that now-a-days a high school grad could make just as good a living racking up a million certs instead of getting a 4 year degree.

I got an associates and a Bachelor from the now defunct ITT in Fort Wayne Indiana.
I guess since the school no longer exists i can go ahead and update my resume and personal title to PHD.

I was surprised to hear about ITT. I thought it seemed like a good concept.

My school didn't go defunct but it is mostly a teaching school so they did go extreme woke.

It sounds weird but it is a lot more similar than what you think. The scientific process and the tools you use to analyze the data doesn't change much.

The scientific process? Sounds like a deepstate conspiracy to me. Vernier Calipers are the only things that I trust to not lie to me.

This is true. Something that really bugs me is that way too often I see stuff like "Believe the Science" or "We have the science on our side".

I've work in multiple research facilities at fortune 100 companies and under several PHD's. I can tell you for a fact that there is rarely just one scientific consensus any any issue.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the thoughtful insight. I've been programming for 4 years now, with only "some college" under my belt. Oddly enough, I've still managed to earn the respect of the engineering team and they often take my advice into consideration on various matters, which is pretty cool. A part of me wants to finish up my AS or begin another path all together, but I'm not sure how much earning potential is left on the table as far as CMM Programming goes. I doubt my employer would offer me much in the way of a raise, even with a degree. I do agree with Chad that certifications can mean just as much, if not more in this field.

Where's the option for us who didn't finish high school? 😱
I literaly spent those 3 years drinking beer and motorboating womens cleavage's. But I turned out just fine anyway...

Education is for people without talent 😃

Some people do not have the talent to finish school… 🤠
The good thing is that there are other kind of talents.

I love educating myself it's just the schools I have a problem with.

Same here. I didn't care about education when I was in high school. I cared about having fun. Someone convinced me to get a GED and after about 5 years in a factory, I was ready learn. I went to school for laboratory science technician and at the same time ended up on the new Contura at work. I actually liked CMM programming so I ran with it.

I served an apprenticeship for machining right out of high school. I also will have an associates in mechanical design technology after next week. Along with a ton of certifications. To be a programmer most of this is not needed. But the technical aspect will only benefit. I plan on getting my CQE cert next along with maybe finishing my business degree. Ideally id like to move into higher management. Running the quality department gets old 🤣

I also have a Chemistry degree. Chemistry doesn't pay. Almost all bachelor degreed chemists pursue other lines of work.

Exactly - testing, data integrity, statistical analysis. That's why they don't say what type of STEM degree is desired in most cases.
