Do you think a bachelors is necessary for success in the world of CMM Programming? I myself foolishly stopped a handful of credit hours away from a Computer Science AS. [Ke...] Posted December 3, 2020 Share Posted December 3, 2020 If your just worried about being able to get a decent job as a CMM programmer, all you *need* is a HS diploma... good critical thinking skills, and employers who are willing to invest in their employees. With that being said, some companies have associate's degrees as minimum requirements (often waved based on work experience). Additionally, having an associate's and/or bachelor's degree can get you a jumpstart on the pay scale, and may be required (or be beneficial) for any consideration of advancement. [Ch...] Posted December 3, 2020 Share Posted December 3, 2020 I have a STEM degree (In chemistry, I started out in a fermentation research lab and ended up running a metrology lab, long story) and I have to admit that it has probably helped me a good bit. However, lately and especially since COVID, I've been racking up tons of certs. Something that really bugs me is that way too often I see stuff like "Believe the Science" or "We have the science on our side". I've work in multiple research facilities at fortune 100 companies and under several PHD's. I can tell you for a fact that there is rarely just one scientific consensus any any issue. I've been programming for 4 years now, with only "some college" under my belt. Oddly enough, I've still managed to earn the respect of the engineering team and they often take my advice into consideration on various matters, which is pretty cool. A part of me wants to finish up my AS or begin another path all together, but I'm not sure how much earning potential is left on the table as far as CMM Programming goes. I doubt my employer would offer me much in the way of a raise, even with a degree. I do agree with Chad that certifications can mean just as much, if not more in this field. Someone convinced me to get a GED and after about 5 years in a factory, I was ready learn. I went to school for laboratory science technician and at the same time ended up on the new Contura at work. I also will have an associates in mechanical design technology after next week. Along with a ton of certifications. To be a programmer most of this is not needed. But the technical aspect will only benefit. I plan on getting my CQE cert next along with maybe finishing my business degree. Ideally id like to move into higher management.
