O-Inspect

Do you guys/gals think that the O-Inspect is better than the CMM?

We are talking about upgrading some the machines here and I'm looking at the Ospect. Does it have the same capabilities that the cmm does? I would think yes but what additional hardware would I need to make this happen.

I'm just so use to using the prismo for measuring and Im not sure if an Ospect will fit the bill.

Like to hear from others who actually have a Ospect.. On the fence as of now...

If you did get one, make sure it has the DotScan and a rotary. Now you have all the capabilities of a bridge
CMM with the ability to non-contact measure. You are stuck with a smaller measuring envelope, and no RDS.

We have a few O-Inspects.

They are very capable machines. We make very good use of them.

They are not bridge CMM's, and have some pretty significant limits. I wouldn't say they are better in general, but if you do lots of small/flexible parts, the optics are great. The optics is a whole different game than tactile probing though.

Size - especially the Z axis.
moving table design - if you have one of the larger machines, loading/touching off parts can be annoying due to the moving table.
No rotating head/limited space for racks. - Because the head can not rotate, you will need to keep a larger stock of probes. But there is limited space on the table for racks
Limited to the VAST XXT head. Passive probing only, which will be slower than an active head, and more limited in probe weight/size.

If you have a substantial need for a backlit optical CMM, the oinspect is a good choice. Otherwise, I would lean to the contura etc, which AFAIK can mount the ViScan camera.

Its a great machine but the stage is very small, and due to the probe not being in the center (the camera is) you cannot actually reach the right edge of the stage with the probe at all, although this means you can go past the stage on the left side. If you have small parts that need measuring its great and I really recommend getting the extended probe rack.

There is no tool that is the best of them all (unless we are talking about the hammer).

The O-Inspect is a great tool, but like all tools it has its pros and cons.

Is there a particular reason you are looking at the O-Inspect?

You should make sure the machine fits the project (part), not try to make the project (part) fit the machine.

O-Inspects are great for optical but I would never buy one for tactile measurement unless it was a very small part of the big picture. The tactile is useful for verifying Z heights, as that's probably the weakest part of the optical side of things. As others have pointed out, they have a small work area, have limited probe storage, etc. Plus, you're working on a glass plate, which needs to be taken care of a lot more than granite.

Hi Zeiss, does anywhere in the portal show step by step to calibrate the vision at different magnification? Please advise?

Thanks,
Tuan
