[Ke...]
Maybe I'm missing something (honestly), but... If a print is "Dimensioned and Toleranced per ASME 'at current release'"... sholdn't there be *at least* one datum called out on the print? Where in the standard would it define if/when datums are, or are not, needed/required?
[Ja...]
ASME Y14.5 covers more than just GD&T and datums, it defines general dimensioning & tolerancing. If you have a very simple part, you may require a very simple dimensioning scheme without any geometric tolerances.

I usually don't question "very simple" parts that sometimes come through (especially older prints)... but I'm currently looking at a print with 80+ ballooned features (wish I could share), with (what looks like to me) some over simplified callouts... but I also tend to over-think things. So I guess there's that.
[Ja...]
You can have geometric tolerances of form without any datum references. If I'm not mistaken, Y14.5 used to consider orientation tolerances like perpendicularity form tolerances (I'm not sure if datum references were required, I would assume so).
