How do I measure this R1.750 on this small part correctly

How would i measure this radius correctly that would approved for FAI and in process inspection

I sectioned the part in quarters and made Curve lines out of them and did a line profile back to Datum E and Datum F and all 4 curves came in tolerance. Not sure is this is how to do but it worked.

But I can not get a good reading for the radius. I haven't worked with Torus very much so I don't know how to make it report properly.

Overall height of part is .265 +/-.001
Diameter at Datum F is .489 which is called out as a basic dimension.

The radius is a BASIC , and I would prefer to scan circles around the Torus. It is Profile of a SURFACE (G-H) not Line.

If it recognizes the surface as a Torus, you can measure it with regular circle strategies, then report Profile to your datum structure. I don't think you need Freeform unless it is NOT a Torus, or you want to report unconstrained from Datums for form.

I did the Torus and it put 4 circles around the diameter. But I can not pick the torus to use as a surface to check profile. I'm must be doing something wrong.

Using points and constraining X and Y worked. Is this acceptable parctice. I'm going to have to explain this to the customer maybe.

No, the customer is not always right. So, enter 1.75 for the radius. What if the radius measured 2.000. Are they going to reject it?

I understand, but that doesn't change the fact that I had a customer that wanted a basic dimension reported on a First Article.

The way it is drawn, the Radius "BASIC" rotates around the Primary Datum in infinite slices.. It doesn't yield any useful information. If they want to know the Shape decoupled from Position, they need to refine the Profile to One or No Datum,

If torus don't play well with other things and I do not have free form. How do I check the surface. I am so lost.

You can measure a circle on the part using the defined center coordinates and diameter. Then add a Radius measurement characteristic, select the circle and constrain it to the nominal center coordinates and radius. Set the tolerance for +/- half of the profile tolerance. This will output a radius, angle and deviation for each point. If every point meets tolerance it passes the profile requirement. You can do this at multiple circles at different angular locations around the part. If you take a lot of points you can hide them and find the largest absolute deviation(s) with Min and Max characteristics and use of formulas in result element.

This may help in case you don't have freeform. It is tedious and time consuming to measure but works.
You must have a CAD model for this to work.
Go to features > Special geometries > General Surface.
Open the feature and start clicking points on the torus surface of CAD model all around.
Set your clearance plane and stylus in measurement plan editor if needed.
You can use this feature in surface profile characteristics.

Note: Measurement will follow the order you selected points on the CAD. You cannot change this order unless you start over. You can delete points in the feature window but editing them might affect your results. I did not seem to find a work around where it will continuously retract to the clearance plane after probing each point; hence time consuming.

I did what you said and I have a lot of points but when I try to use the general surface in the Profile it just has all the points,
how do I put all the points together?

Here you go as a suggestion.

I'm a huge fan of measuring a Curves, and evaluating as Free-Form. Free-Form can be a pain to get it programmed to measure correctly. In addition, the Line Profile plots are also much easier to interpret.

As for reporting the radius. You can create a section the same as the one of the curves, measure a 4 point circle, and constrain the radius. I have also had luck of creating a Best Fit alignment from the curve, and using that as the circle's alignment for the constraints. It may or may not help.

At the end of the day, the Profile overrules the results of the radius.

If you see in the list where you try to select the feature, select the first option which will be the name of the feature itself which has all the points together. See blue highlighted feature in the pic.
The rest in that list will be individual point names listed in name_1;name_2; format and if selected will only give you profile of that single point. 3547_66df23e6215cca2ac77b284b838347fe.jpg

Jayesh, I figured out this issue. Expand the feature window and it gives you the ability to use sub clearance planes.... You still have to change them one-by-one, but you can change them, at least....

Correction. I was able to set SCP+Z globally in the Features Editor window.
