To do it correctly, yes. I have customers who measure a plane on the outboard of the surface, zero off on it, and then measure on the inboard surface and report the difference. I don't like/agree with it, but they are the customer.

It is likely a refinement of the flatness. .005 flatness overall and .002 flatness over any inch of surface. In Calypso, the lower half could be created using Flatness Reference.

The overlapping of rectangles is your option. 1% overlap will produce fewer 1" rectangles. 99% overlap will produce a boatload of rectangles.
