Step Cylinder

I think I have a good application for using a stepped cylinder but not sure I'm using it correctly. I have 2 inline cylinders and have recalled the points into a stepped cylinder. So far, so good, right?

Next, I created a position of the stepped cylinder to A & B for the upper tier.

For the lower tier, I created another position but used the stepped cylinder for the feature and the primary datum feature. Seems ok to me. Any thoughts?

I've seen this type of callout before, and the interpretation that I was given from that particular customer was that it was one whole cylinder, not two individual ones. I think the Step Cylinder would be the wrong approach if this is true for this one.

I have a bonus question to add to this inquiry...

Say you are scanning a stepped cylinder that is significantly different in size and enough have to have separate evaluation settings, when creating the step cylinder, which bore takes precedence as far as what filter & evaluation to use?

In my opinion, filtering does not have the same amount of impact on the results as Outlier Elimination does. This is especially true if using the LSQ algorithm. In the case of the OTE/ITE, sure the filtering can have some impact - I still think it is minimal.

Clarification - if we are talking form tolerances, then yes filtering has a major impact.

I apologize for hijacking your post Tom, been meaning to ask my question for quite some time now and this post reminded me.

Even though the cylinders are different sizes? Could you be more specific on the set up of each tier of the position?

That's an oversight on my end. I just snapped to the two coaxial features part.

In that case, Step Cylinder is the correct approach.

As for your alignments, I'm not certain I understand the purpose of the lower tier, but I think you are on the correct path.

Sorry Tom, I totally missed the second tolerance callout. Are the nominal diameters different, or only the tolerances ?
