[Ni...] Posted December 10, 2020 Share Posted December 10, 2020 Hey all, Yesterday while changing stylus systems our Zeiss Prismo shut down when the Z axis moved down towards the probe rack, it made a click sound and then the drive motor shut off (error shown in attachment). The controller had a "LAG" error on the screen as well. [No...] Posted December 11, 2020 Share Posted December 11, 2020 Lag error usually means that an axis didn't move as far as expected within a certain time frame. May happen when there's slip in the friction drive. A certain amount of lag is tolerated, but above that the drives switch off. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We've already had the Z axis drive motor replaced approx 2yrs ago and the counterbalance approx 1yr ago. My attitude towards Zeiss being #1 is fading.....we've had a Mitutoyo that's see's more use then our Prismo and we've had zero issues with it! Kind of disappointing to say the least. Our 30 year old MC 550 with everything granite (almost π ) is running like a VW beetle and never needed a major repair as far as I can remember (yes, I know it from the start π ). Maybe once a drive motor had to be exchanged, but that could as well be my imagination fooling me. It survived several retrofits and today runs with a C99 and a VAST XT gold. Last year was the first time it calibrated slightly out of spec. Our Contura from 2001 needed at least six new heads over the years, probably more. Some of them went bad already after six months. One had a twisted plate receptacle, so all the probes were askew by 2.5 degrees - the replacement head had the same fault. Y motor exchanged at least twice, whole controller unit exchanged a few years ago (often dies from a failing fan !). Drifting machine zero after maintenance because of misadjusted magnetic switches. All in all, many smaller problems not mentioned here occured shortly after the last maintenance... Ok, I admit that unlike the MC 550 it's running 24/7 and there were a few hard collisions over the years, but a lot of the problems were caused by premature wear-out. [Ma...] Posted December 15, 2020 Share Posted December 15, 2020 I've had a couple of issues over the year involving LAG. In one case we ended up having the drive motor replaced in one of the axis. In the other case I had a small metal chip stuck between the table and the air bearing causing it to bind on occasion. I also had an occurrence where I had a small drop of oil on one of the glass scales. Any time the CMM traveled over the oil it would kick the drives off.
