creating a move point

Im trying to measure some features on the id of a part but am having trouble approaching them, is there a way to tell the cmm to move z- into the part before moving x+ to scan the feature?

You have to use CMM position point for navigating zig Zag position.

In strategy select point without scanning. It's under buttons for polyline and other scanning methods.

Either you can use right hand joystick top button or position without probing icon inside the strategy window.
For both first you place the tip in desired location.
You can also adjust the xyz values inside by double clicking the point.
