Saving STL Visualization

Hello all, I am fairly new to Calypso, with right at about a year of experience.

I am currently using a T-Scan to scan components, and align them to a cad model in Calypso.

The scans are in .stl format, and so I scan, import, rough align, execute base alignment and then measure.

It so happens that I currently have a need to import an .stl scan, align it to the model, and then save/export that .stl with the alignment to that cad model for verification by a different software.

I was successful at this once a couple of months back by going to the stl settings tab, then visualization, and then using the save button to save the stl in its current alignment / position.

I would check that this was successful by importing the aligned .stl I had just saved and making sure it lined up to the cad model.

However now, everytime i check a .stl I've aligned and saved, by importing it back in, it is not aligned and ends up way out in space in Calypso.

Am I doing something wrong?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Can you align the mesh model while inside of Colin, and then export it to the software you are wanting to use it in?

I'm never saved STLs from Calypso, but I know if you align it in Colin it will stick when importing into a secondary software.

We do align in Colin, but because of the critical nature of the part, the base alignment in Calypso with it's reference system is what we need. We loop our base alignment based on two cylinders and two planes because placement is so critical for evaluation.

Simply, we have tried that, but the exported stl was not sufficient for evaluation.

OK. Let me play around with some STLs that I have, and let you know the outcome.

Have you tried using the GOM Inspect software? I've rather enjoyed using that for STL evaluations instead of Calypso.

Certainly appreciate any and all help, more than you know.

I actually have the free version of GOM on our zeiss laptop.

I have tried playing with it, but I cant find any good free training resources.

I am completely new to the entire world of CMM measuring, so it's not intuitive for me.

So, I wanted to give an update:

We have been saving STL's with alignment via Calypso through STL>Visualization>Save.

To check this each time we take the saved STL and reload it into the Calypso measurement plan, and it would show up in space.

I took a leap and loaded one of these STL's into GOM just to see if it retained alignment there. It did!

So I have a new way to check, I'll save in Calypso, load in GOM and take a look to make sure the reference system is saved!

VDA export seems to load into GOM. I tried a small feature and it worked. I made a point cloud of all dat and exported over 190K points, currently waiting on import...

To export STL from Calypso:

Do your scanning in a Point Set/Point Cloud feature. (Or, you can use recall feature points to get the data into a Point Set)

Once the data is contained in a Point Set feature, go to the evaluation tab of it, and perform the triangulation option. (It’s the second-to-last icon out of the row of six, near the top, under “Number of points.”) Then, down at the bottom, there’s a little floppy disk icon with an STL logo on it, and you can export an .stl from there!

In addition to any post processing you want to do, with a point set you can do a nice PiWeb report using the CAD deviation analysis object.

For reference, this is what you can generate using PiWeb CAD Deviation Analysis. When you move your mouse over the scanned data, it shows your deviation from nominal.

Just offering this as a suggestion for those only using Calypso.
