I have been task with getting some information about this option. We are looking
at it primarily for monitor crashes. Can anyone offer any information about it?

Clarke,

I had ran a trial version of CMM Observer on one of our CMM's. Zeiss will give it to you for 1-2 months to try before dishing out the $. It was nice to have. Running in the background, you can determine individual program run time, sort of like PC-DMIS. You can monitor collisions - it'll tell you which user was running, which speed (in each axis) that it collided at. I believe, and I may not be entirely accurate, that it needed to be started before running Calypso. Therefore, if it is not setup to run at startup, somebody could restart the PC and go back to Calypso without any logging. IT can handle this, whether through startup or a script.

Now I'm being told that we downloaded the demo and it did very little in the way of crash information.
Do you agree with that, or does the demo lack any real substance compared to the purchased download?

All I've used is the trial version. When it came to crashes, it told me where on the table the crash occurred and the speed of collision in each axis (obviously a large Z collision is cause for concern). It also told me at what time it happened. I can't remember whether it told me which user was running it at the time of collision or which program was running when it crashed. It flagged each collision event as minor or major by way of color if I remember correctly. It was also convenient to have an idea of how long the programs took to run. My organization did not wish to go forward with an annual fee at the price that they were charging. If it were a one-time fee we would have.

I don't believe there is a difference between the trial and full versions, but Zeiss or someone more knowledgeable than me can confirm that.

  • 3 months later...
CMM Observer is running here, to me the reports from it are open to mis-interpations.
A recent months reports, every reported collision has 2 lines of reports showing collisions about 2 seconds apart.
Also unsettling is unless the operator logs in, the reports list the last log in to be the operator.

This is a Position: 652.066 , -1581.0174 , -747.6316 easy enough.
This is a Velocity: 0, 0,-4.2 How is the velocity interpeted?

This is going to be a sh*tstorm to put in a quarterly report.
Can anyone shed some light on this software?

I am now running SmartServices on all my machines (this is the new version of CMM observer?)
This tells you real-time collisions categorised by minor/major. The data is accurate and tells you the velocity and probe deflection including where on the CMM.
It also shows you productivity info, machine status etc. Worth checking out.
