Employment / Europe

This question is for the European members. I have given a lot of thought to
moving to the UK. I was wondering if any of our European colleagues in this
forum are familiar with their companies, or European companies in general
hiring of foreign/American workers, and how much regulation is involved?

Hello Clarke,

at this moment in time moving to the UK would be a really bad choice.

The UK has left the European Union per 31 January 2020, therefore the free travel regulations for citizens of the UK are not in place anymore.

This makes it really hard for companies to trade within the EU and also for workers from the UK.

For anything other than that i can only speak for my Country (Austria).

My last Company has had Employees from all over the World (on site and remote).
If you want to move to Austria, the Company has to prove that there is no other European Citizen they can hire, which can do the Job (but don't hold me to that!)

Hope this helps.

Hi Clarke,

I recently moved from the UK to Ireland due to high demand in Ireland for CMM programmers. Salaries in Ireland are much more attractive than the UK. We have had several Americans working here, I'm no expert in the immigration process but I don't think there be would anything to stop you moving to the UK or Ireland.

I don't want to get into politics, but i dont think Trump's stance on immigrants from some countries has anything to do with Covid.
He got a mail order bride from the former soviet bloc, he wants less immigrants from "SH Countries" (his words not mine) and more immigrants from countries like Norway.
Google search "Trump Norway immigrants" and you'll find articles that can shed more light on his policies better than i can in this post without breaking the rules.

Hello, Clarke Gilbert,

I think that the worldwide situation that Covid 19 has caused will change the economic situation enormously in the future.
Nothing will ever be the same again as it was before Covid 19!
I think that the future will show which industries will need specialists from abroad.
The individual industrial powers are busy first of all rebuilding their own structure and if possible with workers from their own country.
