Calibration inquiry

Hello all,
I am new to the Zeiss/Calypso world. I have taken over as the quality manager at acompany that hasn't had one for about 6 months. The current employees that have been filling the role are unsure of calibration needs. The first question that has been brought up is in regards to calibration of the CMM. At my previous job we had Hexagon come out every year and do a calibration on our machine, but it was running 24/7, so it was necessary. At my new company we only check parts every few weeks on the CMM, even then it is only a hundred parts or so. What is recommended as far as calibration is concerned? Should we have an outside calibrator come in and certify the machine? Or can we maybe just send the calibration sphere out for calibration and just use it to verify the machine before every run?

I have previously only used pcdmis, so I'm sure I will have plenty of questions...

Based on what you've stated, once a year should be adequate.
As far as what type of calibration to get, not sure. That would
depend on several things. I'll defer to some else to answer that.

As mentioned, there are a lot of variables that guide the need for calibrations.
Here are a few quick concerns.
If your company has to adhere to any quality standards such as ISO 9001, 16949,ect, the protocol should define how often it's required externally or internally.

General probe qualification WILL NOT tell you if the CMM is out of square or accuracy is out over greater lengths.
If your CMM endures a lot of crashes, it should be calibrated frequently.
If you're rejecting a bunch of parts or are having to make a lot of conflicting machine adjustments to keep everything conforming, calibration should be checked.

Short of a full calibration, standards or calibration artifacts should used every time accuracy is questioned.
Keeping the largest part around that you check a lot can be used if it's kept in a clean temperature controlled environment and has had the dimensions verified 3rd party or with other means is handy to quickly see if it repeats from the known verified dimensions.

Zeiss has several calibration artifacts for purchase if you feel you need them.
