Stylus wanders off part into nowhere - please help

Hello,

This is probably a super simple/ stupid question, but in working on a part that I just programmed, I go to run it via manually align. Once it changes to cnc mode, it probes the 1st point on a the 1st plane then continues, but it goes off the other direction and winds up going off the part into empty space. I would be greatly appreciative of any ideas or suggestions you have. Thank you in advance for your help! 🙂

One thing you could do is check inside the feature strategy of the last feature measured before it drifts off into space.
There might be an unintended point at some odd coordinate in that feature that it's trying to find. It's happened to me.

From past issues here are of couple of things to check.
1) Block Edges Plan>Navigation if the default is other than the circled edges on bottom see picture333_c9855a898880e7ed8450784739199eb0.jpg
Calypso gets stupid and goes anywhere. The only fix we could make work is delete alignment and features defining it and recreate features and build new alignment.
2)If you have a planar as part of your alignment, do not use a cylinder or a cone. When I first was learning Calypos in 2005 I had the very same issue. After a day of struggling I called the help line and was informed the geometry from a circle or cone makes Calypso stupid my take. One must use circle on a cylinder or circle on a cone. This creates a point for the planar clocking not multiple points up and down the axis along with all the points that dictate size.
Hopefully I explained this well enough to help you.

To add to Jacob's post, I feel that 9 times out of 10, something is going on with base alignment. From an unstable base alignment built from unstable features or features that don't control the degree(s) of freedom properly to doing a manual alignment in the wrong order/wrong features.

Which is another reason why I always loop my base alignment... if something funky is going on, you will see it in your Delta value.

To resolve this issue, I will usually do a manual alignment from Measurement tab > Base Alignment > OK > Execute Manual Run now in the bottom right hand corner.

It allows you to do a manual alignment without kicking into CNC mode immediately after. After I'm done my manual alignment, I will go to CAD > CAD Model control > Show probing object.

At that point I'll make sure my probe is moving correctly relative to my part (watching it on the screen) and then I move my probe to a discernible feature on the part to make sure my stylus is in the correct location in "space".

At that point I can confirm that everything is OK with my base alignment and the points I took with my manual alignment. If I still have issues, then I deep dive into some of the other posters suggestions.

This has happened to me a few times. Never quite nailed it down but I have a few things that I believe. Did you have a start alignment in the program? I've made changes to start alignments that spun my alignments around. I also made changes to programs and made mistakes in copying features and then altering them. Sometimes deleting the problem feature fixed the problem... only problem is figuring out which one is the problem feature...

Can you provide a screen shot of which edges you blocked so I can get a better understanding of what you did.
You cannot block all the edges just the ones as it pertains to the part as laid out

Here is another screen shot with explanations added. 333_c9855a898880e7ed8450784739199eb0.jpg
You cannot turn all the edges on at once. Remember Calypso Default is the bottom. You can add the top and three sides, Any combination of sides.
I use this to prevent the CMM from taking unwanted movements in and around the measured part.
