[Mi...]
Attached photo is the area of interest. It is a test block made out of rock. My company used this block to test the depth when PDC cutters penetrate thus resulting is the profile as seen. We want to measure the volume of the materials removed which the depth is varied across the profiles, ranging from .001 to .082 inch. We used the Comet L3D to obtain the STL data file. Then I will have to use Calypso to get the volume of the removed materials in each position. I never done anything like this before, so I posted here hoping someone can give me an idea how to get about this. From what I researched, I need to use curve function to get the surface areas, then multiply the “average depth” to get the volume. If going this way, I will encounter another problem, I dont have Curve license as well as I don’t have any training on how to use Curve. I only have Freeform license. Please let me know if I have to have Curve to do this and how would you do it. Thanks a lot and have a nice day.
[Br...]
You might be able to import the STL file into something like solidworks to do that.
[Mi...]
Brett, Thanks for this idea. Unfortunately, I don’t have this software at work just yet. I will try to ask the boss to purchase it. Any other options you might know!?
[Br...]
Generally most manufacturing companies hold a license for some sort of CAD software to handle many engineering tasks. Ask your boss and you might find you already have something. They aren't cheap like Calypso. But some other examples include Creo, Inventor, and Catia, but there are tons of them out there. Solidworks is probably the most popular. I'm not sure if AutoCAD can handle STLs but that might be another option.
[Mi...]
You are right. I do have Creo Parametric 3.0 on my PC, but I only know how to find and open a model using provided PN. Do you or anyone on this forum how to use it to get the volume.
[Br...]
You might try getting involved in Creo's forum. I have very little experience with Creo myself. https://community.ptc.com/
