Absolute values for Characteristics

Is there a way to have characteristic values (X, Y & Z) be reported as absolute values

You could use a "Result Element" characteristic and use the abs function in a formula.

As an alternative to Dave's suggestion, you can also define a secondary alignment using the same features as the base alignment, but with two axes reversed, then define the features with respect to this.

Thanks for the replies, I'll go with Dave's suggestion. You would think that would be an option, the tolerances get a little confusing with negative values
