Loading Calypso 2018 - Thinking about converting to use PiWeb.

Installing the latest version of Calypso this morning and I'm tempted to start learning and using PiWeb for reporting.

However,
I haven’t messed with PiWeb much for the fact that I have several years of programs that use the custom report with “text elements” that define various characteristic nomenclature.

Last I heard, PiWeb doesn’t report text elements; is this still true?

Any advice on Calypso 2018 that I should know?

We have to list manual inspections on our reports that will be inspected (caliper, thread gauge etc.) I just put a text box into the report. You can save your report as a generic report that any measurement plan can use, or you can make measurement plan specific reports. I use the latter due to the fact that the characteristics to be manually inspected vary from part to part.

Is that confirmed information? The release notes just speak of "changes" that will happen in 2019 and that the changeover phase will be completed in 2020. If I haven't missed an official statement saying otherwise, I don't think the custom printout will vanish completely.

The way I understand it is that you would still be able to run older programs that use the custom printout, but you wont be able to create new ones with it.

This is from the release notes:
"Beginning with CALYPSO 2020, it will no longer be possible to activate the discontinued reports for new measurement plans. However, the settings for old measurement plans will be retained. Old report templates can still be output. CALYPSO 2020 marks the end of the transition phase.

I remember reading that some time ago. It'll be interesting to see how exactly they'll implement this. Our custom report hasn't changed in >10 years, so I don't really need the editor. I hope it will be possible to open the inspection file of a new measurement plan in Notepad, edit a few lines and so reactivate the custom printout.

I really struggled with PiWeb trying to make a custom template that suits my needs, but whenever I was working on it I discovered new things it CAN'T do. Right now I'm a bit fed up with it and decided to wait what the mysterious "changes" will be.

So in theory, if you use a template program to create new programs then you should be able to keep the custom printout.

I'm not sure. For all I know, you could lose it as soon as you save that template program as a 2020 version.

PiWeb is a much better reporting software. The ability to sort for just the at warning limit or over the limit characteristics is worth it alone. I understand it does some silly things (M line and tolerance to BASICS) but they are fairly easy to fix. I have been doing a lot of work with PiWeb this year, will be doing a tour of my Calypso customers making sure they understand custom printout is leaving and giving them documentation on how to get PiWeb to do what they are doing with the Custom Printout.

It will always bug me that PiWeb with its training course, Page after page of " how do I..."," Why won't it..." ,and "why can't I's" Is going to REPLACE custom printout ! it should be an ADD on option, not a replacement. Don't fix what isn't broke ! 🙁 🙁

2018 conversion is doing OK, despite the repeated default printout popping up every-time you touch it.

I did have the wording in the start menus comment section (describes set-up details) mysteriously show up in a characteristics group comment, which is strange but, when you're strange, no one remembers your name.

I hadn't tried PiWeb since they came out with the Basic version but, this newer PiWeb Reporting is much better and a step in the right direction.

What documentation? Can you share with the forum, please? In my humble estimation, PiWeb has potential but no resources for the designers to fulfill that potential.

I created a program template in 5.4 and use it in our off-line seats using 2017 and 2018, it still works when I bring it back to our CMM's that run 5.4. (Been in the process of upgrading for too long!)
Hopefully it will with 2020 as well, I'l be fully retired by then so Ii wish you all luck with that! I should get familiar with PiWeb reporting though, at least so I can speak to it with my replacement(s), as things move forward.
