Rotating the rotary table to an alignment other than Base System

Does any one have experience of creating a new radial alignment on RT and then rotating the RT in the new alignment. We need this facility when checking components with features that can vary radially. There is a facility in RT rotation where you can enter the alignment system to use, but alas this has never worked
