How to set manual Clearance Planes on O-Inspect

Hi all,

I am trying to create a base alignment through optical measurements alone (autofocus for rotational plane and z origin, two line autopaths for x,y origins). No cad available and I'm dealing with an elastomeric part that cannot be probed.

However, I'm not sure how to set up an appropriate clearance plane. Using the same methods as we did in the basic course for probes, I'm not getting the same results. In this course we jogged the head to the "upper right"-most part of the part to be measured, set as +XYZ, then jogged to the "bottom left"-most part, and set as -XYZ. By doing this with the optics, it starts the program (set to manual alignment) by jogging away from where the part and the clearance plane was set.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Also, has anyone had any issues trying to create a base alignment using touchprobe, and then using optics to take measurements? I have a similar issue where the optics sensor doesn't remember where the part is, even though the touch probe runs its alignment just fine.

Make sure all your clearance planes are set to Z+ when using the Camera. Otherwise, it should work. If you are using a styli to set your clearance cube, make sure it is active when you are setting the cube locations.

Alternatively, if the part is mostly flat, there are no high obstacles on the table and no probe in the head, you can define a "fake" clearance cube (e.g. only .1 mm in Z) and set all elements to clearance group +Z. This way it more or less ignores the cube.

Regarding the inconsistencies between probe and optics: Have you executed a tactile-optical alignment?

You can always write in the dimensions by hand. The number you are putting in the fields is going to be from your origin. Just put numbers in slightly bigger then your part.
