What are some examples of Best Practices for verifying probes and maintenance of Styli?

Monitoring the S or Sigma value during the qualification is one method however maybe not the most complete way.

Creating a program using the reference sphere as your "part", and then scanning it in many directions, and then reporting the roundness will indicate if your probe is still round (we're assuming the reference sphere is probably very round, so the error will be produced by the probe)
