Temperature of workpieces

How is your feeling about the importance of the workpiece temperature?
How do you use the functionality of compensation in your daily business: the sensor is at its standard position or do you adapt it to each workpiece individually?

And what would you think about knowing the temperature before you start the measurement?

A few questions to you

What kind of tolerances are you trying to hold?
How big are your parts?
What temperature is your environment?
What temperature is your part?

to keep it as simple as possible I'll take a sample application:
tolerances are <10 µm with lengths of approx. 500 mm
environment is an air conditioned measuring room at target temperature of 21 °C
workpiece temperature varies between 21 and 24 °C, sometimes higher as it comes from production areas

  • 1 month later...
3°C workpiece temperature variation on a 500 mm length workpiece would lead to a geometric workpiece change (thermal expansion) of roughly:
36µm for aluminum workpieces ((24 µm/K/m)*0,5m*3K)
17µm for steel workpieces ((11 µm/K/m)*0,5m*3K)

So yes, temp compensation is important 😉

Frank
