I would recommend anytime a feature is being scanned that filters and outliers are applied. As a rough guide, any scan with a closed loop path such as a complete circle path the Gaussian filter works great. Otherwise, if the loop or scan is not "closed", such as a line or an incomplete circle path, the spline filter is recommended. A simple rule of thumb for outliers is 3simga with 5 adjacent points with a pre-filter of 10-5000upr or 0-10mm depending on the feature in question.
