Hello All,

Things to know.
were planning on getting the dongle.
-budget 1-2k preferably the closer to 1k the better.
-we run small plastics parts. Most of our parts run in 1ft/1ft/1ft cube measuring envelope
-we would like it to run smooth not struggle to use it
-we are planing on using an SSD

what do you run your second seat on? OS/specs(cpu/gpu/ram)/Brand

what should we avoid?

Thanks in advanced

I am very happy with my Lenova Thinkpad.

It took a little bit of shopping but I required a system running Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Xeon CPU E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80 GHz
32 GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro M2000M graphics card with 20 GB total memory

In my own opinion if I had to do it all over again I would not have gone with a laptop but with a workstation. Monitor too small for any detail or close in work and keyboard is not comfortable to use for any length of time. Have added a second larger monitor and a real keyboard which kinda does away with the portability aspect.

My 2 cents

Just putting it out there, but cost savings for a one time purchase item like a PC are very unlikely to be worth the savings in the long run.

If the offline seat is in everyday use, then every time the hourglass is spinning while it is 'thinking' is money down the drain, over the lifetime of the computer your up front savings are likely to have cost you much more. That said everyone has their own budget constraints.

Whatever you get, I would say bare minimum get the fastest CPU clock speed possible with as much RAM as possible with the absolute minimum being 8GB, a good video card is a necessity, an nVidia Quadro card is your best bet IMO, anything else your asking for graphics problems that you will deal with on a continual basis. Finally, If at all possible make your main drive an SSD drive.

I personally agree with the workstation idea, had the laptop and if I had my own company programming I might want one, however working in one location, the workstation allows multiple monitors and a more ergonomic work experience.

Workstation I use for our Offline seat here is 3x your budget so probably not totally helpful.. however..

750W Power Supply
ASUS TUF Z370 Pro Gaming Motherboard
Intel i7-8700K Processor 3.7GHz
32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4 3600 Memory
SAMSUNG 960 PRO M.2 1TB 'M drive'
NVIDIA Quadro P4000 8GB GDDR5 Video Ram
3 - 24" HD Monitors

Yeah, that was pretty much the point, spend a bit more but spend it once and have a rock solid system for several years minimum before needing another upgrade. It has never made sense to me to save money purchasing something barely usable when it will be used every day for years.

Not only that but this system cost about the same as what a 'standard' HP Z440 system from Zeiss goes for. Performance wise there really is no comparison between them though.

Of course I did have to spend the time purchasing the components and assembling it - and there is no simple warranty call to be made if needed, but for me it made sense as I have a background of building my own computers.

Thank you for the input guys.

we have a dedicated system that is a workstation with multi monitors that runs our cmm but when it is busy we can the new dongle on other workstations in the room that are very capable of running calypso.

The idea of getting a laptop is for the mobility of it. being able to take it for meetings/travel etc.. But when we do use it. We do not want to have to struggle for it just to load up and move a cad module around when reviewing a program or even making some changes on the fly.

Are you replacing the pc-license with a dongle. Or are you getting a dongle too? It's not possible to run one and move the dongle and run another one simultaneously.
