Forum Software

I at one time talked several times with a contact at Zeiss (America) regarding the forum software and a possible upgrade to an actual 'full forum' type format, where we have categories and notifications of replies, etc. I was told the request was being sent to Germany (I said I'd do all the setup for free just to have better functionality) but once things get to Germany, the contact told me 'they really don't care'. Sad if true.

Has anyone ever felt the need for an upgrade or contacted Zeiss about it? I would just really like to have better functionality from this forum. It's a great resource, and more often than not, if I call in a support request, I can get a more solid answer here, faster, than I get a call back from Zeiss Support... your thoughts? or am I just being 'bitchy' this morning... haha

My thoughts on the "New Forum" remain the same as in the link Owen provided, and maybe 10 other threads.
Why is a forum so difficult? The internet was created to be a forum, it's at the root of all things computer-e.
(FYI, PC-D has a "canned" forum which has no ads and as far as i am aware has never been hacked. its the same forum format that 10,000 other forums use. so why in 2018 is Zeiss trying to re create the forum?)

I haven't seen anything that says Zeiss is trying to recreate what a forum is, just that they are setting one up. This that we have been using here is simply a poor cataloging system. Any canned package forum software, like 'simple machines' for example, would be a HUGE improvement. Just to have notifications of replies to questions asked! But even the canned packages still have to be set up. and there in lies the time taking to get it done, because in my experience with Zeiss, they don't move all the fast... at least not in things like this! 😃

I am from Germany and I happen to live not too far away from their German headquarters. My two main observations during 27 years of Zeiss experience:

1) They seem to be fond of odd software solutions no one else is using. And it takes them a long time (many years) before they move on to something else.

2) They often announce new software features, support solutions etc. and sometimes they even start implementing them. But then at some point they stop and you either get nothing or some half-baked solution until they announce something even newer...
Example: Some time ago (it feels like years now) they suddenly killed the software request section without notice. On inquiry they said they had something new up the sleeve that would be coming soon, but they would put the old section back in place temporarily until the new one is ready. Well, the old one is still there and will be for a long time, I guess.

I wouldn't expect a new and really modern forum anytime soon 😉

Dave, I have had that idea and did a little poking around. First of all, there is a Calypso group on LinkedIn with almost zero activity and lots of features. Also, a Facebook page could be setup that might fit the bill but, convincing one's IT dept to allow access to FB could be problematic.

Sorry... been so busy I haven't had time to check this... Dave Scott... yes I would love to do that... I've set up forums using Simple Machines Software and it's quick easy and ... Simple! Works well... we could take input on what we want for different forums/topics/sections, etc. Could copy over posts from this forum into that! All we need is server space. And I have a friend at Godaddy and I may be able to get that cheap... I could check on that! (the fact that you asked me a question on 2-27 and I had no idea because I get no notification, is EXACTLY the point why we need a REAL FORUM.

@Kevin.... +1!
Even though it's that 'other' software...at least they run a Forum that is somewhat more responsive to the end user than what I see here. don't get me wrong... the user posts here are fantastic.
BUT...At the other place, there are software product owners from H3x that participate. I know both companies wish to wring a buck every chance they get (via training etc..), but as one who learned priceless stuff on forums like that one, a REAL Calypso forum as Kevin mentioned would be the cat's pajamas!
With due respect, IMHO this forum is like interacting with a pencil and crumpled post-it via Pony Express. I'd be MORE than willing to donate to an alternative site as mentioned above.

Richard, if you have extra server space with your hosting account and were willing to allow that to be used, I would setup the forum software. We could all contribute and vote on what categories and things we would want set up on it... it's been a while since I set up a forum, and I'm getting old, but I'm sure I can still do it.. not that difficult at all...
