Torus vs. Diameter

Recommended Posts

I have a program that is using a Torus for a Diameter and Roundness. We are able to get the size in tolerance but the Roundness doesn't move. The Torus is from selecting from 3D Model. I have probed a Circle on same feature and the Diameter is repeating and the Roundness is in tolerance now. Just curious on Torus compared to Circle with Roundness, i am missing something here?

A circle is a 2d feature and a torus is a 3d feature. The 2d feature roundness should and will repeat better because its just a radial distance around a center point. Roundness of a torus is how consistently the minor diameter is maintained around the major diameter in 3d. Do you have to use the torus for roundness and diameter or will a circle measurement give you the same functionality?

The program that i am using is a 3D model and it is using torus when selected. I probed points along the OD and my results as shown here OD Bottom/Roundness is very different. The OD at top of page (characteristic) is using a Torus and the OD at bottom of page is probing to make a diameter. No matter how much filtering the Torus roundness will not budge from what is shown. I am happy with probing it i feel more confident about my numbers and repeatability. I am just curious of the difference. Doesn't the Torus have to scan all around? This Torus is only probing the outside for the OD.
