2D Curve issue

Hello everyone,

I premise that I only received the basic Calypso course which did not include the study of curves and surfaces. I’m experiencing an issue with Zeiss Calypso (on a Zeiss CMM) while trying to measure a deformed component produced by incremental forming technology. The goal is to acquire and extract the curve that represents the final deformation of the part.

  • I decided to use the 2D Curve element in Calypso.
  • I set up a continuous point acquisition strategy, touching the component manually along the curve of interest to collect about 20 points.
  • The first time I tried this, it worked perfectly: Calypso saved the points and used them for the best fit evaluation of the curve.
  • After that single successful attempt, the same procedure no longer works. The points I provide (by touching the component along the curve) are not being saved and therefore do not appear in the 2D Curve element. Consequently, they’re not used for the best fit.

Is there by any chance a minimum number of points I have to provide for the creation of the element? Is there some option that I have mistakenly ticked and therefore can no longer reproduce the curve?

I thank in advance those who take the time to answer this question.

If you initially did this: create new empty curve -> opened that feature -> started touching on part - then once curve hase nominals then it won't add new. - You would need to make new curve or remove nominals.

If you want to obtain measured curve you should scan it, then make new curve and recall measured points. This step will recreate nominals from actuals.
Or if you want to use actual points in other software you can save measured points into a file.

Or you can describe your needs in better way - perhaps we can advise another approach.

Sorry, perhaps I have not highlighted the problem clearly. The problem is precisely that although I follow this flow ‘create new empty curve -> opened that feature -> started touching on part’ the points I touch are displayed on the screen with respect to my reference system but are not ‘stored’ by the function to perform the best fit. The attached image represents the only attempt that worked: as you can see in the blue circle the 12 nominal points were acquired from the feature and in the strategy (red circle) I was able to proceed with the continuous acquisition of the curve. This worked only once. Now when I touch the points on the curve it only increases the count in ‘number of points’ but these are not ‘stored’ in fact the area in the blue circle in the attached image remains in white. I hope I have been clearer, conversely if you prefer I can try to make a video of the operations I perform.

Well video would be nice.

I still think you are doing this:

  1. created empty curve
  2. touched a part to obtain nominal points
  3. closed curve

Now you are doing this:

  1. re-opened previously defined curve
  2. touching a part - this time it won't obtain additional nominal points

You would have to start from beginning - using empty curve - deleting segment won't clear nominals.
To clear nominals open list of nominals ( by clicking down arrow icon under "CP +Z" -> selecting nominal points and right click on mouse to delete.
And delete anything in strategy window - except for CP definition ("Dati sicurezza")

As soon as I can, I can make a video. However, I reiterate that the problem is in storing the points. When I touch the points, they appear on the screen in the reference I have created but the nominal point co-ordinate window (the one I have highlighted in blue in the attached figure) does not fill in. It remains blank and in fact when I request the best fit nothing happens. I have not done anything different from a first attempt which was effective and yet now it no longer works so I was wondering if there is a minimum number of points to be given to the element or if they must have specific characteristics to be effective.

If you have cleared nominals and/or segments, points then it should work with at least 2 points.

Does it work if you create new curve with new name?

Unfortunately not. It seemed very easy to me but now I don't understand where the problem lies. Do you by any chance have a guide on curves?

I don't have any guides, documents or pictures. Only thing what i've read was manual and forum.

What if you reopen program or restart Calypso?

I've tried your approach - since it was not adding any nominals with touching, i've found that you have to turn on digitizing on.

And when you are done you just click Digitizing off.
It works if you want to add next ones - turn that opt. on and it will add nominals.
