Can anyone who is familiar with Bevel inspection help me understand what all is required to inspect a bevel - as far as what information is required. 

Here is all I have information on the drawing, 

  • Number of Teeth
  • Module
  • Pressure Angle
  • Pitch Angle
  • Shafts Angle
  • Mean Spiral Angle
  • Hand of Spiral
  • Direction of Rotation
  • Pitch Apex to Crown Distance
  • Tip/Root/Pitch Angles

What else am I missing? Do I need a nominal file for the topography? Do I need a master gear? 

There's a whole portion regarding DATA GENERATION - what do I do here?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

 Howdy. Bevel gears are the most challenging of gears to inspect. If your Engineering team has 'nominal' files, Gleason GAGE, KIMOS, etc this will be a huge help otherwise there is quite a process involved. Most of the info you have will get you there, you will also need Mounting Distance and another linear dimension which is from the mounting surface to the top of the front/face angles.

 Without the nominal data generation provided, you may have to manually create this which will involve a learning curve. In summary, you will have to measure your gear datums in Calypso and ideally line up a tooth at +X (and also find a way to measure this at +X for your alignment) . Once aligned and measured, you can go to GP Bevel, input data, choose stylus and, then probe 4 corner points on each flank to create nominal data. Once you have this, you can begin testing your measurements.

If you have an accurate CAD model, you may be able to generate from the CAD model as well.

In most bevel production. All production gears topographical results are compared to a known gear of higher quality, aka a "gold master standard" etc.

There used to be some info on this in the help manual. 

Good luck sir - I would recommend getting training if you will be checking more bevel gears.
