Outer diameter of a "toroid"

Hello

What would be the best way to measure the diameter generated in a gasket housing?
I mean, it's the outer diameter of a "toroid", but I can't find a way in GOM Inspect to recognize that element, and I don't know how to generate  point exactly at the maximum outer diameter. This is a help vie baout that I try

All lathe parts have torus features, so I'm surprised more users are not in demand of this feature. I have been asking for a torus feature for 2 years.

To find the OD of a torus, you must find the equator of the torus. There are several ways, but it depends on your tolerances and the quality of your meshes.  Also the first example shows creating 3 circles to find the equator...this may not be a good way to go in your case b/c you have around a 100 deg arc circle so you lose accuracy of the center of the circles the least amount of arc you have. It is an art to find it and it came with experience cutting parts on an EDM to find challenging dimensions like these.

Method 1(see 1st image)

Create 3 or more circles and then create a circle out of those circles, then use that horizontal circle to create a plane-normal and then create a section cut from that plane. It should be at the equator...if it is off by a little bit I have another solution for you in Method 3

Method 2(see 2nd image)

Use 3 or more touch disc point on selection and set them up so they go thru the part and stop when they hit the selection. This should find the high points of the torus. From here you can use those points to create a circle and just measure it or again..use that circle to create a plane-normal and then section cut there and create a circle and measure it.

Method 3(see 3rd and 4th image)

Create a section at the equator and then offset the planes by .0005" a few times in both direction and create more circles. Now you can go into the user defined measurement and select all the circles and find the MAX value of all the circles and that would be the quator OD diameter.

One last thought on finding the equator of the torus...It really doesn't matter that you are that accurate. Why?

I've argued this several times, but no one I work with seems to want to listen. When you section a lathe part to measure the internal diameter, how accurate do you need to section the part on center to get an accurate measurement of the diameter?  It really doesn't matter unless the part is extremely small...here is an example using a torus OD of 2 inches and a circle diameter of .180"

If you miss sectioning a part off center you are measuring the chord of a circle, which is the length that does not pierce the center of the circle. That equation is:

chord = 2* sqr(r^2-d^2)

r is the radius of the circle

d is the distance away from the center

Hi,  i am wondering whether the silhouette section feature could be useful here .  By selecting the data in the toroid and projecting onto a plane describing the axis of the toroid youll get a section that describes the maximum extent of the toroid, which you now can create a fitting circle.  This hopefully then gives you a better representation than having to sub sample.

Do let me know if that works!

Hello

Thanks to Tim and James

About Juim’s comment thanks I try make your proposal

... and yes is really surprised that torus option is not included, when other less powerful software’s have this option that is really common.

Till now, in other parts I made section cut taking by eye the middle, as the most of times the tolerance is enough to be absorbed by this "eye" approach. But I was thinking that an easier option was included in the software and was hidden for me

... but I see that is common problem for many users. I hope that GOM’s staff take note an include this in next updates

................. and if they include the possibility  to add a personalized tool bar for to get an quick access to most common construction tool will be  the paradise  🙂  …..

Okay Nanno, thanks  so much for the tip, I didn't know that!

It's a shame that we can't put a custom toolbar in this empty space and make the workspace cleaner ..
