Back in UMESS times operators were advised to first touch 3 points on a circle and the fourth one in a different height. UMESS would use those to caculate a rough estimate of the cylinder's position and orientation and use that as the starting value for calculation. Calypso with its circle and line strategies must have different, more sophisticated ways of determining a first position of a cylinder. But as you can see, even these can sometimes fail.
