Clearance Cube Star Probe Issue

Recommended Posts

We are using a star probe with a Duramax. I set my clearance cube very tight around the part, and when the star probe uses the X & Y clearance planes it uses a much larger cube than what I have set. My clearance distances are set to 0. Is this some issue with star probes? Any way to resolve it?

I have to run thousands of parts, so I need my movements as tight as possible. We are palletizing the parts very tight.

In the CMM Settings under the Probe tab, there is a diameter value that creates a safety zone around the XXT sensor.  If the stylus system diameter (not the ruby) is larger than this value, then the stylus tips will move to the clearance plans, as you probably expecting.  If the stylus system diameter is smaller than this value, the sensor will move out to the clearance planes.  It's much worse on an XT.  Even worse on some clearance planes when using an RDS/XXT.

If it's too far for your application, consider using a +Z clearance plane and rely on the clearance distances or position points to navigate safely.

I tried changing that setting (Extras-Settings->CMM->Probe->Diameter Max). It was set to 100mm. I changed it to zero, and it fixed my issue.

However, I'm not sure what it's supposed to be set to. The foam cover on my Duramax Z-axis measures 52.7mm. So, should I change this setting to 52.7mm (am I interpreting this setting correctly)? I don't want any crashes due to me misinterpreting this setting.

Earlier I mentioned trying the +Z clearance plane along with the possible clearance distance adjustments and/or position points.  That will totally ignore the safety zone.  Did the +Z CP not work for you?

Hi,

as you stated correctly the 100mm is the default value and only should be changed if you know exactly why you are doing it (since its a global setting).

It is a safety feature for the "quill" of the Z-Axis!

You can activate the "Narrow Navigation Paths"
