Manual stylus system change within measurement plan

Ok, heres what I'm trying to do: I have a part that is close to the Z+ limit of our CMM. There is a large hole in the top but I need to measure a diameter about a foot deep into the part. The stylus system needed to get to it has no chance of clearing the top of the part. So ideally I would like to drive the machine directly over the part with a message box that pops up telling the operator to insert the stylus system into the machine from inside the part, then measure the diameter, then again have the operator drop it back off again. If it tries to go to any clearance plane in this process, it will alarm out . let me know if anyone has ever tried to do this and how you made it work.

I've never actually tried to do this, so I'm not positive if this would work, but may get you close. First, make sure that the stylus that you are using for the deep diameter is not assigned in the probe rack. This will trick CALYPSO into prompting a manual probe change. Then, you may be able to do something with theoretical position points inside of a feature to locate it. For instance, you could have the probe used to measure before take a theoretical position point above the diameter (in the circle feature) then have the strategy for the circle run using the long probe then do another theoretical position point using the stylus you want after the circle. This way you're changing stylus using theoretical position points inside of the feature strategy. Again, not positive if it will work, but it is what I would try first.

Position Point is the first icon on the second line inside of the strategy window:

You would have to run the measurement plan in Position Points only for this to work - unless you want to run the measurement plan in sections where a group of it runs via Clearance Planes, and then another group is ran via Position Points. Either way, extremely dangerous as your safety is gone, but it can be done.

I would use 4th button - it should move to position regardless of actual position of a part ( it should go to position from machine alignment ).

Then if you select probe which is not in rack, then it should probably ask for manual change. Or how it would act if you just place pause there ( conditional stop or how is that ). It should prompt message to continue, but you would perform manual change.

  • 2 weeks later...

A bit late to the party, but a functionality to do exactly this-have the operator insert a probe manually for reasons for clearance or access, was added in Calypso 2024, in case that is the version you are utilizing or are able to move to.

My apologies, it appears that time has once again gotten away from me, this feature was added in Calypso 2023. Basic information on this can be found in the release notes in the New Features section (page 2-27 in the English version). I would expect that more information could also be found in the Calypso built in helpfile (accessed through hitting F1 on the keyboard) but I do not have my system open to verify this.
