So today we were qualifying the stylus systems on a vast xt and we dropped the masterprobe and the ruby came off.

I have a stylus the same size and length. Would it be ok to just change it? My logic says yes because it compares to the reference sphere but wanted to ask anyway.

Kevin, your right. You can use this ift the results good. I think the only differnet ist the red marking.

I have always believed the Master Probes spherical form is a higher quality than a standard stylus.

Zeiss offers precision styli with spherical form that is (I think) near the quality of a Reference Sphere.

I once tested out using a backup 8mm Master Probe for an 8mm Reference Sphere. I could not get it to qualify my regular Master Probe which is 5mm.

Don't forget to set the new length of this new Master Stylus.  That could be bad.

Unless you're working down into the .0000x" range regularly, I'd go for it and order a new master stylus, get back to normal soon as it arrives.  Double check one or two things inspected during the use of the imposter Master.

If you are working that tight, you'll need to test as Richard suggests in order to justify.  Depending who you're working for you might wanna retain product for evaluation once your new stylus arrives.

Management will love this last option 🙂
