[To...]
I was executing a feature and this happened. This is not an XTR. In 22 years, I have never seen this happen. I couldn't stop it. Hit e-stop. I was afraid to record the video but felt I had to. Actually had to turn power off to get it to stop. IMG_1155.mov Edited July

[To...]
Please sign in to view this quote. My VAST Gold was shaking like an XTR head. Was able to convert to mp4 IMG_1155.mp4 Edited July
[Ma...]
That was hilarious 😄 I would assume that something went wrong with that active head and only power off will help. I hope it's only one time bug and not for buying a new head.
[Ri...]
Nothing to see here, that's the new diesel version. Its more efficient and doesn't produce CO2. 😁

[To...]
Please sign in to view this username. It is possessed. This machine does weird things. For example, every once in a while, when I am doing a probe change, as it is picking up a stylus system, it sits in the rack for up to 30 seconds before it comes out, acting like nothing happened. A service tech said "it was just thinking". Please sign in to view this username. We will see. Please sign in to view this username. I hope it was a one time thing, too. CMM Check time. [Ri...]
Yeah. I believe there are "tarration motors" - or essentially the motors that tare the weight (balance the system). I've had them get "tweaked" before. I've never seen it this bad though.
[Ch...]
I know something similar, it happened after a heavy crash. The probe is broken or 💩💀
[Ke...]
Please sign in to view this quote. Hmm...yup. When mine was doing that, it 100% needed a new head.
[Dr...]
Please sign in to view this username. I'd be curious to know whether the sensor was registering any rapidly-changing position values through the jogbox/stoplight at the time - though not curious enough to say, "do it again!"
[Ow...]
I'll join the list of saying that I have seen this happen before. It was over 12 years ago and if memory is correct, fairly sure we had to replace the Vast XT head.
[To...]
Please sign in to view this quote. Didn't notice. I was scrambling to make it stop and get a quick recording of the action. I'm guessing this will be an intermittent problem until it is a fully-mittent problem. For now, it seems to not have affected the performance, as I re-ran the last part from a few days before it happened and the results were within 0.0001-0.0002mm.

[Ch...]
But honestly, do you believe this head can heal itself? I have a few gray hairs and have been doing this job for 20 years. But with something like this, I don't believe in repeatability or accuracy anymore. Sorry. Crazy Folks 😎
[To...]
Please sign in to view this username. Absolutely not. However, does it mean the sensor no longer works? I am running some simple accuracy and repeatability checks right now. Then, I will be running our CMM Check artifact program. We are also working on a plan to deal with it. I'd like to know what caused it. Is it a failure of the sensor or was there an external trigger that caused it? I will post results shortly. This might make you guys feel better: I had one cmm, my lemon cmm, that blew through 2 heads in 2 years. Both times it was tarration motors going out (they didn't look nearly as bad as what Tom's did). IT NEVER IMPACTED THE ACCURACY. The CMM was really my lemon cmm. Not only did it keep blowing heads, all the drives eventually got noisy and had to be replaced, some more than once. No major crashes. The machine was kept in the same room as two other identical cmms. All 3 had the same usage and same operators, but only 1 cmm was a problem. Ultimately, we found the cmm had undergone a lot of settlement (this was a brand new building with new concrete. Some concrete expert can comment and suggest what might have happened). This problem CMM settled much more than the other two in the same room. Got it releveled and lasered. The problems went away. Haven't blown a head or drive in 5 years now and no more settlement.
[To...]
Update. I ran my probe verification program 10 times and other than the radius reported for the MasterProbe and the X/Y/Z values, it doesn't look too bad. I'm surprised the radius with MasterProbe wasn't "spot on" like the 2.0 probe. Good enough for some parts, not so much for the kinds of parts we got the Prismo for. Yes, we do have a call into service. Stylus Verification_Post-Qual_2_TableProtocol.pdf Edited Tuesday at 07:01 PM

[Pa...]
Saw something like this only one time on our VAST Gold. Never in 15 years of XT Gold use. I was called into the room because the CMM operator had "Gotten the head stuck in the pocket". He had terminated the measuring run as the CMM was somewhere between pickup and drop off. Not certain any more. Operator had tried multiple times to drive the CMM off the MSR pocket in all directions; drives kept turning off. I wish he had stopped earlier. As I walked into the room he was trying the <Shift+lower return>+<F2> drop. The Vast gold started moving like this but only along Z. It was smashing down into the top of the MSR pocket with enough force to bend the pocket downward every time. Over and over this happened with the E stop triggered until I killed the control. I manually pushed the machine off the pocket, sent it home, blah blah blah. I could not find any evidence of measurement problems using artifact assessments. We went ahead for a few weeks watching closely. It's now been a few months and nothing crept up in terms of measurement or movement anomalies. We did not need to replace the head in this case, though this surprised me. We're still using the same head with no related services. Machine was due for calibration just a week later and passed as-found. No funny movements. My CMM will also "hang" for several (but I don't think 30) seconds occasionally right after pickup but before leaving the pocket. I'm actually wondering now if it's related to the MSR pocket. Re-locating a pocket doesn't seem to help but replacing might have? Hard to say when you've fixed an intermittent problem. It was the only time ever that a CMM actually scared me. I do NOT like that this movement can occur with E-stops engaged.
