scripting change units of measure

OK i must be missing something. I can get the current units of measure in a script but how can i change them?

 I would imagine you could just set up the script to do the math right? 25.4mm for each 0.001 inch?

I could do the math on my many points over multiple stages but life would be easier being able to switch the system preferences thus allowing everything to update instantly on the fly

You must change the units then restamp(overwrite) the report.  This can be done thru scripting...what is your capability level with python scripting?  Everone seems to leave that key item out of their questions.
