Our CMM was serviced 2 days ago where the Tech replaced the RDS-CAA.  I had replaces the XXT sensor a week ago but we kept having issues. My question is: is the probe not supposed to be at the sphere where it is currently scanning?

, Thanks for asking about this.  RDS-CAA replacements are common, and it's not uncommon for customers to troubleshoot issues by first replacing the XXT, especially when the root cause is not immediately apparent.

Zeiss can analyze several problems remotely, and sometimes this can take the guesswork out of component swapping (not always).  The spring inside the XXT tends to wear, so it's nice that now you have a fresh RDS and XXT going forward.

First of all, you mentioned that you "never mess with the settings."

Start messing with the settings.

Caution and training have their place in the metrology lab, but your best way to learn and advance your skill is to dig into Calypso with curiosity.

I'm not advising making mass changes without understanding the implications.  However, I am daring you to see how far you can develop.  And there are ways to experiment in Calypso while mitigating risk.  When I'm learning new software, I keep a text file open to log the changes I make to settings.  These forums, pressing "F1" (help files) in Calypso, and consulting Zeiss application specialists are all great ways to learn.

To your immediate question: na_vor's response sounds likely.  

The orientation and/or reference sphere geometry that was specified when beginning qualification is probably different than the actual orientation on your cmm. Check to see which direction your reference sphere is facing, and make sure it lines up with what you choose for "Ref. Sphere Position".

The graphic on the right side of this image can look confusing before you understand what it's communicating.  That graphic is "Tilt" of the reference sphere. Pretend you're above the reference sphere looking down. Once you define the Tilt angle, the other remaining axis, perpendicular to the Tilt angle, is called Rotation.  For example, 180° Tilt and 0° Rotation points straight upward.

I have:

Tilt 180

Rotation: 0

I reset the masterprobe & qualified again. It is still not finding the part when do the manual alignment! It just goes to a different location... like to the side or down
