Hello everyone,

I am currently in a discussion with the manufacturing department regarding the definition of my datum C.
The outer diameter serves as datum A.
I have defined datum C as a 3D line based on the outer holes and used it as a rotational reference.
However, the production manager believes that this is incorrect and that the alignment must be established using a single hole – meaning the 3D line should be created between one hole and datum A.

Who is correct in this case?

Attached is an excerpt from the drawing.

I believe this drawing is wrong. You can not place datums on axis. You can not tell which axis it is. Center of 1 hole, center of outer diameter ( part ).

If they want to have C as one of the holes for screws, then they should place it there, or define it as C1 and C2.

As Martin allready mentioned, the drawing is not distinct on how the datum ist meant to be build.

Maybe the section view A-A gives more information on this.

The datum should be in aligment with how the part is fixed during production and of course how it is used in the assembly. Sometimes you can make sense of non distinct drawings with those considerations.

Or you ask your customer ...

Okay, thanks for the helpful answers. In section A-A, nothing is defined for my datum C, so I created an axis through the two holes.
