Report Format Editor - Can’t Add Variables to Reports

I’m on CALYPSO 2025 (V8.x) and cannot get the Report Format Editor
(Resources → Design Custom Printout → Report header Compact Report...) to work correctly for the Compact ReportNot working with any report.

The SYS / EDIT / START / OTHER lists do load normally, but:

  • I cannot add any items to the header
  • Clicking a field does nothing
  • Items won’t place in the layout

I’m not using PiWeb — the Compact Report must output as a TXT file, which is required for a downstream custom reporting process.

What I’ve checked:

  • Running as Master
  • Measurement plan open before launching the editor
  • Correct protform path:
    C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Zeiss\CALYPSO\protocol\protform\
  • userfields.txt formatting (formatting errors can break editor behavior)
  • Aware of Calypso 2025 cases where Windows permissions prevent editing Calypso base files despite proper Calypso permissions
  • Verified the editor should still work per ZEISS printout customization documentation (Calypso 5.6+ covers newer releases including 2025)

Has anyone else on Calypso 2025 seen this issue — where the lists load, but nothing can be added to the header?

After some testing on my end I see the same issue as you in 8.0.08, the lack of ability to make edits and save when using the Compact Report editor. I went back to the previous versions of CALYPSO 2021 - 2024 and in all of these the editor functions as expected. CALYPSO 2025 seems to be the only one with this issue.

I wonder - was this functionality removed intentionally or is this a bug within CALYPSO 2025. Typically I would suggest contacting your local ZEISS support so a potential bug report can be escalated. I will see if I can escalate this myself as you now have me curious. I'll let you know what I find.

As far as I know the compact report was never meant to be removed from Calypso, so the editor should work as well.

The switch to PiWeb only replaced the custom printout, basic reporter etc., and even these can be reactivated with a compatibility setting

ZEISS Germany confirmed this is a known issue with the Compact Report Editor in CALYPSO 8.0.0 - 8.0.08. It will be resolved in the upcoming Service Pack update 8.0.12

Guide -> How to Download & Install CALYPSO Service Packs

If you need a more immediate fix you could make the desired edits in a older CALYPSO version and transfer the file C:\Users\Public\Documents\Zeiss\CALYPSO\protocol\protform\cphead.gra to the CALYPSO 2025 directory or contact your local ZEISS support team to ask if they can request a temporary fix file to implement on your system stand alone.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the details Shawn. That statement is definitely true for the Custom Report, it has been fully replaced with PiWeb, however that does seem to contradict the info I was given for the Compact Report.

We may need to wait for the release of 8.0.12 to confirm one way or another and go from there.

The 2020 release notes (end of custom report -> PiWeb transition) mentioned three old report formats which were replaced by PiWeb: custom report, basic reporter and flex reporter.

In the 2022 release the corresponding menu items were removed (but can be reactivated with a compatibility option - this was not mentioned by the release notes) and the basic reporter was no longer installed by default, but can be installed manually.

The 2023 release notes had no information as to any further changes regarding the compact report. So I guess the info above might be based on a misinterpretation of the fact that the compact report is no longer active by default. Inactive doesn't mean removed. At least I hope so. 😮
