Barcode question

Hello.  I am seeing the barcode scanner option and have a couple of questions.  With Calypso, can you use a barcode on your traveler to choose which program you want to open?  Or, is the barcode scanner just something to use once the program you want to run is open to input data into the program header?  It would be nice if it was able to be used to open a program, then as long as it is on the traveler correctly, there would be no errors in opening programs.  I am asking because we have multiple machines and programs are being opened by people on 1 machine that is set up on a different machine and they are not doing manual alignments on them, just using the alignment from the other machine.  We just had a pretty good crash on one of our machines recently that this happened.  Thanks for the help with this.

Are the programs being stored on a network. How can one machine open a program from another machine?

I would recommend using autorun and locking out privileges for operators. With programs on the CMM's local drive and in autorun the operators would only be able to open the program for that machine. All they would be able to do is click the program icon load the part and hit run. If you have it set up correctly in would in effect, be the same as what you ask. In addition, you can use poke yoke fixturing with no need for start alignments.

Hi,
As far as I know, the ‘Barcode’ extension can only automatically insert the protocol header data from the barcode.

To select a program with a barcode, use Autorun as Clark has already suggested. Restrict access rights for users as much as possible.

We use the "Key-word" and "search-Dialoge" to identify "most-uniqe" our programs.
Add the line [SEARCH DIALOG      :'1170' '131' ] to the end of your *.arn file. The numbers are the position of this window. The user is not able to close it or to remove it using the access rights.
Now you can assign a unique name to each test plan. To do this, use the Define key name function .If you now scan this key with a barcode scanner, it will be entered into the ‘search key mask’. Autorun will then jump to the icon regardless of which layer it is defined in. The user can now start the program selected in this way.
Of course, after scanning a barcode, modern scanners can check it for plausibility, etc. in an external script/programme. It would also be possible to ask the user to scan additional barcodes relating to, for example, the clamping and the CMM machine. Only when everything is correct is the ‘search key’ entered in autorun.
Therefore, it may make sense not to make this search key readable by humans; i.e. a 20-digit code or something similar so that manual entry is not easily possible.

Surely just a detour, because there are at least two pieces of bad news:
1) The search key is NOT unique but ‘greedy’. Let's say your search key is QA1234-234. If you enter QA12, the FIRST search key found will be QA12. So QA12999-888 would then be active one.
2) Unfortunately, an icon will NOT be visible if more than one page full of icons is defined in a layer. In short: the window will not scroll. The user must therefore search for the activated icon in the layer using the mouse.

Regards Karsten

If I recall right, I did a project at Cummins two years ago, they had automated programs via a barcode. I think you will need FACS to automate programs via a barcode, talk with Zeiss about this.

FACS might be helpful when you need to code information in 2D Matrix. With using normal Barcode (like prices on items in the shop). You can use scanner and configure it correctly. Few years ago I made 1 inspection plan that was better than Head & Shoulders shampoo - as it had possibility to run 90 different programs. 3 different family sizes, 10 sizes in each family, and 3 operations. All in 1 inspection plans. And customer was required to scan correct barcodes for to set-up inspection plan correctly - operation, part type, size. this could be scanned or typed manually. And that was set to work under Autorun on Fixture for up to 25 parts per batch.
