'Create Automatic CAD Surface From Mesh' not working?

I have a scan of a gear and want to use the 'Create Automatic CAD Surface From Mesh' function on it. It initially seems like it works and give a preview of a mesh that looks exactly like what I'm after. However it gives the attached error. It's frustrating as it looks like it has already generated what I want but I can't click 'create'. I have tried small scans and varying the number of segments but can never get it to work. Am I doing something wrong? Is it a bug with the software (I'm using 2023 and 2025 and neither seem to work). Any help is really appreciated. :)

Hello Tom,

there might be some mesh errors or gaps that prevent the function from creating the automatic surface. There are some tools in the mesh editing workspace that might help to prepare the mesh for the autosurfacing like close holes. If it's still not possible to construct the surface, please contact your local support with the mesh so we can analyze it.

I understand that the error is not that helpful. I'll pass that on as feedback to the development.
