1mm Star Probe Qualification

I’m trying to qualify a new stylus on a ZEISS system using a VAST XXT sensor and I’m running into issues with the qualification path “shanking out.”

Current setup:

  • Sensor: VAST XXT
  • Reference sphere: 8 mm
  • Stylus: 1 mm ruby star stylus (M3 XXT, DK1 L40)

The path that the qualification wants to take is 'shanking' out. After some research, it looks like I may need to switch to a 'Six Points' option under the Mode section of the Probing Systems Qualification menu. However, my drop down menu in the mode section only shows "Qualify passive stylus" as an option.
Do I need the 'Six Points' option under the mode section in order to qualify the 1mm star probe?
If yes, how do I get this added?
If no, how do I qualify this stylus?

From this thread, the author states that a custom sphere was used for the initial qualification; I'm hoping this isn't the only solution:

With styli that short, you'll likely need at adjust your taper angle to avoid shanking. Under stylus system management, locate your stylus system and go to the Geometry tab. You should see a column called Taper Angle. The default setting is 180º (the equator of the reference sphere). You'll need to shoot for a smaller taper angle until you find one that works (maybe 165º?). Note that changing this setting, although calibration would be successful, means the probe isn't being physically checked where it would make actual contact with your parts (i.e. your probe could develop wear at it's equator, but your calibration would theoretically be in spec as it uses math to account for the taper).

This is not possible with an XXT on first qualification.  XXT requires 180° of coverage on Passive Qualification.

XXT has two qualification modes.  "Qualify Passive" and "Geometry Requalification".  Passive requires 180° and must be completed at least 1 time before "Geometry Requal" is available to use.

That styli build is obviously a custom construction.  My advisement is to try a smaller styli to qualify against as a trial.  Maybe a 5mm MasterProbe or something similar with a very rigid shank.  Even 5mm looks like it may be too large based on the length of the shank on each probe.

Take note - a disc probe is not suppported on an XXT contrary to the above diagrams
