Drives Shut Off - Z Axis (Contura)

Recommended Posts

We have a Contura G2 that was functioning fine, yesterday. The power went off (overnight) and now the CMM will only move in X & Y Axis. Any attempt to move in the Z direction at any speed results in the drives shutting off. The air is at 4.9 bar; I tried a soft reset of the controller & a hard reset of the controller.

I've never seen this issue with a CMM, so any insight/advice is appreciated.

Are you able to home the machine once connected? I remember having this issue ages ago, but don't recall how we addressed it.

I'd try to pull the Z column down (with the drives off) then rehome it.   Don had a good point, are you able to home it?

On startup it connects and the popup to Home comes up.... click, and the drives shut off.

Is there a release for the Z axis? The toggle only releases the X & Y

I don't have a contura, but on my accura, there is a button that releases the air, you get to it thru a hole in the housing or just take the cover off.  On my Micura's, you can just pull it down with the drives off

I just happened to have a Zeiss tech here.  He says you have to take the cover off and there are two switches you can turn 90 degrees to release the rollers.  Said to be careful and make sure you don't let it fall.

He also said contura's are sensitive to getting debris on those rollers which could cause what you're seeing.

I guess I'm learning something new today... "Two Switches"?

I really don't want to "adjust" the wrong thing....Can you mark up this image?

I think it's just the one switch to the right of the Z mast. I also have not heard of the two switch arrangement so I'm learning too lol.

Ah that's right. I know there is a switch under the dust cover along the Y axis, but I don't remember what that does either. 😄

It must be these.... they push out the rollers. The Z axis does move "more freely", but it is still tight and makes a screaching sound when the mast is moved...

Well, it was definitely these 2 switches that I circled... I came in this morning, and they let the mast move freely.

My best guess is that the humidity (I just learned that it got up to 55% in that room...) was causing the problem.
