Simple distance measurement and Space point

Hello everyone,

I am relatively new to Calypso but already have some experience with other CMM software.

I would like to measure a simple dimension AB (see the attached photo).
This dimension involves an angle, but that shouldn't be an issue in Calypso.

To measure this distance, I follow these steps:
1- Create points A and B.
2- Configure clearance and retraction settings based on the geometry.
3- Create another point near A and construct a line.
4- Measure using the "perpendicular" function (between B and the previously created line) and select the "depth" option.

Do you agree with this approach so far?

If so, my question concerns how points A and B are captured.
I have the choice between "Touch Point" and "Space Point."

I should mention that I do not have a CAD model.

With "Space Point," the AB dimension can vary significantly just by slightly altering the direction of the i, j, and k vectors.

Which point capture method do you recommend for my application?

Thank you for your advice.

 

I set my point with a plane point but i don't see any improvement in my results they are not stables.

I noted that there's 3 different option to determine the normal:

- Probing direction

- Plane measurement always

- Plane measurement in manual

I didn't find in the manual any explanation on this matter, but they affect a lot my results and the stability.

When i choose ''plane measurement always'' because my faces are little, the probe miss the surface and then the normal vector is affected and of course my results.

 

Also, when i create my line ( i attached a figure), the line is not connected to the 2 points.

Is it a graphical issue or a problem in my construction?

Do you have at least drawing?

I don't understand how you got this 2d line. Did you use recall or recall measured points?

I think that using such sketch is not much helpfull, because everyone from us are looking onto problems differently.
Just to summarize: tolerances, problems with definition for CNC scan, varying results in what range, drawing vs used characteristic.

There can be many right choices with very different approaches. Also sometimes scale of real part vs magnified drawing can be misleading.

Hi,

I attached a clearer drawing.

To get my 2D line, I created an other point(Ubis) close to pointU, and by point recall of U and Ubis i created my 2D line.

I'm looking to measure the distance between U and U1 according to the drawing.

The dimensions of the part are approx. 2/3 cm on each axis and the thickness 2mm.

I hope that's clearer now

  • Measure both as a Plane-Point.
  • Create a Secondary Alignment that is rotated to be parallel to the distance
  • Create either a Caliper or Simple Distance
  • Change the active alignment from the Base Alignment to your rotated Secondary Alignment
  • Measure the distance in whatever axis you are looking for (I'm assuming X).

Just keep in mind that since you don't have a true measured feature to set the direction, you are relying on the actual angle being close to the nominal angle. The better measurement would either be a Plane to Plane measurement or a Plane to Point measurement. Even if you could do something like measuring a Plane on both surfaces, construct a Symmetry, and using that as your setting direction then you can use thing like Cartesian if wanted.
